“The Simpsons” season finale has fans freaking out.
*SPOILER ALERT* This article contains spoilers for “The Simpsons” season 36 finale. Do not read further if you don’t want key plot points revealed.
The animated cartoon just wrapped up an incredible 36th season with an episode called “Estranger Things.”
The series is now primetime television’s longest-running scripted series in American history.
But despite its iconic status, fans of the animated series were blown away by the unexpected turn the show took in the season finale.
In the finale, blue-haired matriarch Marge Simpson dies.
However, this doesn’t necessarily mean Marge, who is voiced by Julie Kavner, won’t be back for season 37.
Marge Simpson’s Demise Happens In a ‘Flash Forward’
As shocking as Marge’s death is to fans of the long-running series, it’s important to note that it happens in a “flash forward” 35 years in the future.
Homer and Marge’s children Bart, Lisa and Maggie are adults. And Bart and Lisa have drifted apart, which was Marge’s biggest fear.
Adult Lisa is now the Commissioner of the NBA. Meanwhile, Bart is running an unlicensed retirement home where dad Homer Simpson lives. And he lives there without Marge.
It’s Homer who brings Bart and Lisa back together, when the siblings decide to bring him home. They sit down together and watch an episode of their shared favorite tv show as children, “The Itchy & Scratchy Show.”
As Marge celebrates her children’s reunion from Heaven, viewers get another shock as a cartoon version of Beatle Ringo Starr shows up saying, “Love, weâll be late for the Heaven buffet. Thereâs a shrimp tower.” That’s when it’s revealed that Marge is remarried, to a Beatle no less!
Fans React to Simpsons Shocker
Simpsons fans are letting their feelings be known on the show’s Instagram account.
In the comments for the latest post, one wrote, “Howww could youuuu ??? In other episodes predicting the future of Bart and Lisa.. marge was old with Homer howww could you doooo that to usss ð©”
Another commented simply, “YOU KILLED MARGE ?!ððð”
And another ask the question on many viewers’ minds, “Why did you k!ll off Marge?”
Yet another demanded, “YâALL BETTER BRING MARGE BACK RIGHT NOW I AINTT PLAYIN”
And another lamented, “Why yâall kill marge bro what the h***y is going on with yâall bring her back at least as a ghost how yâall take out child hood away like that yâall could of took homer”
What’s Next for ‘The Simpsons?’
The good news is, since Marge’s death is set 35 years in the future, there’s no reason viewers won’t see Marge in upcoming episodes, as long as they’re set in present-day.
Even better news for fans, “The Simpsons” has been renewed for four more seasons.
Season 37 is expected to debut in the fall on Hulu and Disney +.
