According to Entertainment Weekly, Adrian Grenier, who portrayed Nate â Andy Sachsâ complicated and often-criticized boyfriend (Yes, Internet isn’t a big fan!) in The Devil Wears Prada â wonât be stepping back into the role for the sequel. Fans often label him a “red flag.”
According to Entertainment Weekly, two sources familiar with the production revealed his absence as filming began.
‘The Devil Wears Prada’ Sequel Begins Production With Original Stars
Production on the long-anticipated sequel is now underway, set to continue through summer. 20th Century Studios confirmed the news on Monday. Director David Frankel and writer Aline Brosh McKenna have also returned, bringing back the creative force behind the original.
Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci are all confirmed to return, reuniting the fan-favorite cast nearly two decades after the original’s release.
Revisiting Nate: Who Do Fans Think of Him As A Villain?
To jog your memory, in the 2006 film, Andy Sachs (Hathaway) undertakes a whirlwind journey through New Yorkâs elite fashion world under the tutelage of Miranda Priestly (Streep).
Along the way, her boyfriend Nate became a point of fan frustration, with many labeling him the “true villain” of the story for failing to support Andyâs career.
In a 2021 oral history with EW, Grenier reflected on that backlash:
“It hadn’t occurred to me until I started to really think about it, and perhaps it was because I was as immature as Nate was at the time.”
He continued, “At the end of the day, it’s just a birthday, right? It’s not the end of the world. I’ve come to realize the truth in that perspective.”
Why the Sequel Took So Long
Director Frankel once admitted there were tentative talks of a follow-up years ago. In the same interview with EW, he said: “[The studio] didn’t ask for [a sequel]. We had a meeting where we said, ‘What could we do if there was a sequel?’ Maybe it was stupid; we felt like, no, this story has been told.”
Still, author Lauren Weisberger’s follow-up book sparked renewed interest.
What to Expect in ‘Devil Wears Prada 2’
Plot details are under wraps, but multiple reports previously hinted that the sequel would follow Miranda Priestly navigating a struggling publishing world.
At the same time, Blunt’s character has risen to power at a fashion conglomerate that Runway needs as an advertiser.
‘The Devil Wears Prada 2‘ is expected to hit theaters in 2026, bringing fans back into the world of Runway nearly 20 years after the original made cinematic history.
