“The Vampire Diaries” gave audiences some steamy on-screen romances during its eight-season run on the CW. But off-screen, the cast of the hit supernatural drama had some surprising love stories that flew under the radar. Here’s a look at the lesser-known romances among “The Vampire Diaries” cast that fans might have missed.
‘The Vampire Diaries’ Elena and Damon Dated In Real Life
While fans swooned over Elena Gilbert and Damon Salvatore’s epic romance, the castâs real-life relationships were just as intriguing. Fans may recall that Nina Dobrev (Elena) and Ian Somerhalder (Damon) had a relationship off-screen that started in 2010 and lasted for three years.
A year after his split from Dobrev, Somerhalder moved on with Nikki Reed. They married in 2015 and welcomed a daughter named Bodhi Soleil two years later. In June 2023, they welcomed a baby boy.
Dobrev eventually found love with snowboarder Shaun White in 2020. In October 2024, it was revealed that he had popped the question, and they are now engaged.
The Many Loves of Zach Roerig
Candice King (Caroline Forbes) and Zach Roerig (Matt Donovan) dated from 2011 to 2012, mirroring their charactersâ on-screen fling, according to Us Weekly. But, their low-key romance didnât make headlines. In 2016, Roerig started dating Nathalie Kelley (Sybil) when she joined the show for a one-season arc. But, they broke up in 2017.
Similarly, Arielle Kebbel (Lexi Branson) and Roerig quietly connected years later after “Vampire Diaries” went off the air. Their relationship was recently revealed after they played love interests in the Hallmark film “Love in the Great Smoky Mountains.”
As for King, she revealed in December 2023 that she was dating Steven Krueger, who played Josh on the spinoff series “The Originals.” Their romance didn’t begin until years after both shows ended. They reportedly reconnected at cast reunions and fan conventions.
More Low-Key Romances on ‘The Vampire Diaries’ and ‘The Originals’
Kat Graham (Bonnie Bennett) kept her romance with “Vampire Diaries” cinematographer Darren Genet under wraps for three years. They started dating in 2017, but didn’t go Instagram official in 2020. The couple got engaged in 2022, but split a year later.
In 2013, Paul Wesley began dating Phoebe Tonkin, who played Phoebe on “The Originals.” They dated on-and-off for years, but split for good in 2017.Â
In season 3 of “The Vampire Diaries,” Joseph Morgan (Klaus Mikaelson) found love with Persia White (Abby Bennett Wilson). After three years of dating, they tied the knot in 2014.
Meanwhile, Danielle Campbell (Davina) and Colin Woodell (Aiden) met on the set of “The Originals” and started dating in 2018. The couple announced their engagement in August 2023.
All eight seasons of “The Vampire Diaries” are streaming on HBO Max, while all five seasons of “The Originals” are available on Netflix.
