‘The White Lotus’ Actor Sam Nivola Explains Why His Character Didn’t Clean the Dirty Blender

During the season 3 finale of “The White Lotus,” Sam Nivola’s character, Lochlan Ratliff, uses a dirty blender to make a protein shake, not knowing that his father used it the night before in an attempt to poison the family.

Lochlan’s mistake was almost fatal, but he managed to survive. Many fans wondered why he wouldn’t at least rinse out the blender first, and Nivola answered their question on an April 8 appearance of “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.”

“I was expecting that Saxon had made a protein shake in it. I thought it was just leftover protein,” Nivola said, referring to his character’s brother.

He continued, “So, I’m like, you know what? A little extra protein never hurt anybody. I’m not that much of an idiot!”

‘The White Lotus’ Fans React to the Dirty Blender Scene

While Lochlan Ratliff survived the deadly poison, “The White Lotus” fans expressed their horror at his not cleaning the blender before using it.

“I can’t wrap my head around making a smoothie with a dirty blender. Lochlan kinda asked for that to happen,” a fan tweeted.

Another pointed out, “It doesn’t matter that Lochlan doesn’t know that drinks were poisoned, he’s still using a dirty blender that stayed on the counter overnight with coconut milk in it.”

One “White Lotus” fan mused, “I think Lochlan using a dirty blender signifies how he has had everything done for him and handed to him. He’s probably never washed a dish in his life.”

Vogue Magazine blamed Lochlan’s dad for his near-death and wrote, “Technically, my beef is really with Timothy Ratliff, the one who didn’t clean out the blender, but I guess he was … distracted by trying to off his own family?”

Sarah Catherine Hook, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Sam Nivola, and Jason Isaacs attend the season three premiere of HBO’s “The White Lotus” at Paramount Studios in Los Angeles on February 10, 2025.

After the season 3 finale of “The White Lotus” aired, Nivola revealed to Deadline that he had known about the poisoning scene since reading the script.

“We got sent all the scripts just a few days before we flew out to Thailand, so I knew it all coming in,” he said on April 7.

Nivola shared that he was worried that his character would die before he finished reading the script but was glad Lochlan survived.

“I think it’s a good little red herring because I think it would have been too sad if he died, and it’s a great distraction from the people who actually die because then you don’t expect that even more,” he said.

“It’s great storytelling from Mike, as always,” Nivola added, referring to the show’s creator, Mike White.
