Long before the tragic deaths of director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, police records show that authorities were called to their Brentwood, Los Angeles, home multiple times over the past decade â including at least two wellness checks.
The previously unreported activity provides context to a family situation that was far more complicated and fraught than many outsiders might have realized.
Police Were Called Twice in 2019
According to information reviewed by PEOPLE on Friday, Jan. 2, Los Angeles Police Department officers responded to the Reinersâ residence on at least two occasions in 2019 for calls that were formally coded as a welfare check and a mental healthârelated service, prior to the coupleâs deaths on Dec. 14, 2025.
In both 2019 instances â one in February and another in September â police arrived at the home to perform their checks and reported no immediate indicators of a crisis at the time.
The first call, placed on Feb. 25, 2019, was logged as a classic wellness check, ordered to see on arrival whether there was any sign of danger or distress.
Records show officers conducted the visit, documented the situation and relayed the outcome to supervisors.
Later that year, on Sept. 27, a second response was categorized as mental healthârelated, though the official report notes officers found âno indication of mental illnessâ when they arrived.
These responses came years before the horrific discovery of the Reinersâ bodies inside the family home and the arrest of their son, Nick Reiner, who has since been charged with two counts of first-degree murder in connection with their deaths.
Nick was living at his parentsâ property at the time of their death.
While the 2019 calls are now part of public record, itâs important to note that authorities did not publicly connect those earlier wellness or mental healthârelated visits to the later tragedy.
The identities of the individuals involved in those earlier incidents were not disclosed, and Los Angeles Police Department records do not specify who contacted law enforcement or whether a particular family member was the subject of the checks.
The Family Rob & Michele Leave Behind
The couple married since 1989 and were the parents to three children: Jake, Nick, and Romy.
Rob also had a daughter named Tracy from his marriage to his late ex-wife Penny Marshall.
Jake and Romy issued a heartbreaking statement after the news broke of their parents passing.
“Words cannot even begin to describe the unimaginable pain we are experiencing every moment of the day,” the siblings said. “The horrific and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is something that no one should ever experience. They weren’t just our parents; they were our best friends.”
