There’re two Jet Set Radio games on the way and one is a remake

Is this a remake or a new game – or both? (YouTube)

Screenshots and video of a big budget remake of Jet Set Radio have appeared online and they’re different to the previous announced reboot.

It’s over six months now since Sega first announced it was going to revive classic franchises including Streets Of Rage, Shinobi, Golden Axe, Crazy Taxi, and Jet Set Radio. There have been a few minor leaks since then but officially we still don’t know what any of the projects really are.

It seems that some may be bigger budget than others but when they’ll be properly announced is a mystery… as is why screenshots and video of a remake of Jet Set Radio have suddenly appeared online.

The video is very clearly not fake, and seem impressively well done, but Sega has never mentioned a remake before and even though the leaker insists that’s what this is, none of the locations shown in the footage seem to match up exactly with the Dreamcast original.

The remake is apparently open world, even though the original wasn’t, but it’s possible leaker Midori is confused and this is the reboot after all.

Midori was recently exposed for pretending to be a Japanese woman, despite being a white man, and so all of their subsequent comments have been put under greater scrutiny, especially as they’ve previously used other personas that have been responsible for less reliable leaks.

His background adds an additional layer of confusion to the leak, although Midori suggests that the footage is from fairly early on and is being developed in Unreal Engine 5.

They refer to the game Sega unveiled last year as a ‘free-to-play reboot’, which sounds plausible but Sega has never confirmed that’s what it is.

Design documents of a remake have also emerged online from a separate leaker so it may be that the footage here is from a remake that plays fairly fast and loose with the original game.

A remake of the original Jet Set Radio is in the works at SEGA, it is a full remake of the Dreamcast game and it is not related to the F2P reboot.

It’s all rather confusing, especially as there’s no clue from Sega as to when they might reveal more about any of their retro projects.

They didn’t show up at any of the summer showcases and now the only guaranteed preview event left in the year is The Games Awards in December, which is where the games were first announced.

Other rumours have suggested that Sega is planning to revive many other of their older franchises, from Altered Beast to Panzer Dragoon, but nothing further has ever been announced.

The soundtrack is definitely from the original (YouTube)
