Tim Allen has been through quite a bit in his life. Naturally, the actor has experienced several high points, but the loss of his father is one of the extreme lows. Now, he’s sharing how Erika Kirk inspired him to finally forgive the man who took his father’s life 60 years ago.
Allen took to his official X account on September 26 to reflect. The “Home Improvement” alum said, “When Erika Kirk spoke the words on the man who killed her husband: ‘That man⦠that young man⦠I forgive him.’”
He continued, “That moment deeply affected me. Â I have struggled for over 60 years to forgive the man who killed my Dad. I will say those words now as I type: ‘I forgive the man who killed my father.’
Peace be with you all.”
Allen’s Father Passed Away when He was a Child
Allen has made a career out of being a funny man. However, behind the laughter lies a great deal of pain. Allen’s father, Gerald M. Dick, passed away in November 1964. This occurred as he was driving home from a football game, and a drunk driver crashed into his vehicle.
He opened up about this in a 2006 appearance on Inside the Actor’s Studio. He said, “He broke his neck and died in my mom’s lap right there. As many times as I’d relive this â if you haven’t had a death in your family, I don’t suggest it â but it certainly changes every single thing. From your cells and DNA, it turns a different color.”
Naturally, his father’s tragic passing changed everything for Allen. He has also discussed having disdain for the month of November. Additionally, he has felt guilt for not having been in the car and perhaps not praying enough to save his dad.
His Father Helped Inspire His Comedy Career
Allen has spoken about how he came from a long line of funny people. This includes his dad. Because of this, it’s no surprise that he was able to turn his pain into a decades-long career. Of course, one of his most iconic roles was in “Home Improvement.” The show lasted from 1991 until 1999.
However, Allen’s career remains strong today. He now stars in the ABC series “Shifting Gears,” which will return for its second season on October 1. Allen also starred in “Last Man Standing” from 2011 until 2021. His credits also include voicing Buzz Lightyear in the “Toy Story” franchise.
According to Deadline, he will return for “Toy Story 5.” The film is scheduled for release on June 19, 2026.
