Tim Allen is known for playing confident, wisecracking characters on screen, but the actor recently shared a far more personal story, one that revealed how a serious health issue went unnoticed despite repeated medical visits. During a candid conversation on comedian Bill Maherâs podcast âClub Random,â Allen said doctors missed a dangerous condition on his nose multiple times before someone outside the medical field finally noticed something was wrong.
The 72-year-old actor, who currently stars in ABCâs âShifting Gears,â said the issue lingered for roughly two years while he continued making television appearances and undergoing routine checkups. According to Allen, it took the sharp eye of a makeup artist to flag the spot that would eventually lead to a life-altering diagnosis.

A Makeup Artist Spots What Doctors Missed
Allen said the turning point came while preparing for an appearance on âThe Today Show.â A makeup artist noticed a spot on his nose and asked why he had not addressed it yet. Allen explained that his dermatologist had seen the mark several times and did not express concern.
The actor said the makeup artistâs comment stuck with him, prompting him to raise the issue again at his next appointment. This time, Allen said, the dermatologist took a closer look and quickly realized the spot was more serious than previously thought.
Allen recalled that the doctor admitted he had made a mistake. The lesion, he said, turned out to be skin cancer, a diagnosis that shocked the actor, given how many times it had been overlooked. He later learned the condition could have been either melanoma or carcinoma, both of which can become dangerous if left untreated.
Surgery, Humor, and a Sobering Reality
Doctors referred Allen to a specialist who recommended surgery. Allen said the surgeon warned that removing the cancer might require taking most of his nose, a possibility that immediately raised concerns about his appearance and career.
True to his comedic roots, Allen used humor to cope with the situation. He joked on the podcast that his face is central to his livelihood and asked the doctor to leave enough of his nose intact so he could continue performing stand-up comedy without having to explain a drastic change in his appearance.
The surgery ultimately went well. Maher said he could not tell Allen had undergone reconstruction, and Allen agreed that the procedure had a positive outcome.
