Tom Cruise Earns Guinness Record for Fiery ‘Mission: Impossible’ Stunt

Tom Cruise is no stranger to danger, and now, he’s got another Guinness World Record to prove it. While filming “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning”, the actor pulled off a jaw-dropping feat: jumping out of a helicopter with a flaming parachute 16 times.

The intense stunt, captured for the eighth installment of the blockbuster franchise, earned him a brand-new Guinness title. And like always, Cruise did it all himself.

Tom Cruise’s Fiery Stunt That Broke a World Record

Before the big reveal, Cruise shared a behind-the-scenes video from the shoot. He captioned it simply: “Light the fuse.”

In the clip, he explains just how risky the jump was:

“If this is twisted while it’s burning, I’m going to be spinning and burnt. I have to kick out of the twist and then ignite in 10 seconds,” Cruise says before one of the jumps.

“We’re going to be real smart. I’m not saying be risky. We don’t take risks, obviously.”

The fiery scene was filmed in South Africa’s Drakensberg Mountains. The crew flew him to a minimum altitude of 7,500 feet before each drop. His parachute, soaked in fuel, would ignite in mid-air. Cruise had to release the burning chute and deploy a backup — all while falling.

Guinness Praises Cruise’s Fearlessness

Guinness World Records was quick to praise the 61-year-old’s dedication to authenticity. “Tom doesn’t just play action heroes – he is an action hero!” said Craig Glenday, Editor-in-Chief of Guinness World Records.

“A large part of his success can be chalked up to his absolute focus on authenticity and pushing the boundaries of what a leading man can do. It’s an honour to be able to recognize his utter fearlessness with this new Guinness World Records title.”

Cruise’s History of Breaking Records

This latest title isn’t Tom’s first Guinness honor. He once held the world record for the most extended on-screen breath hold, clocking in at six minutes during “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation.”

That was later broken by Kate Winslet, who held hers for over seven minutes while filming “Avatar: The Way of Water”.

Cruise was also in Eyes Wide Shut, the Stanley Kubrick film that holds the record for the longest continuous film shoot — a whopping 400 days.

In April 2024, Cruise earned yet another Guinness World Record: most consecutive $100 million-grossing films. Starting in 2012, he’s had 11 back-to-back box office hits. Cruise’s streak of box office hits includes “Jack Reacher”, “Oblivion”, “Edge of Tomorrow”, “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation”, “The Mummy”, “Top Gun: Maverick”, and “Dead Reckoning”.

“Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” is now in theaters and already thrilling audiences worldwide.

Whether this is Cruise’s final ride as Ethan Hunt remains to be seen, but if it is, he’s going out with one epic jump.
