Tom Cruise’s ‘Days of Thunder 2’ Gets Big Update From Jerry Bruckheimer

It’s been a while since rumors began that Tom Cruise was making a follow-up to his 1990 NASCAR film, “Days of Thunder.” While the film wasn’t a critical or box office success, it’s notable for a couple of reasons. One, it was where Cruise met Nicole Kidman, whom he would go on to marry and make “Far and Away” and “Eyes Wide Shut” with before divorcing in 2001. Second, the film, which was made four years after “Top Gun” and six years before the first “Mission: Impossible,” helped solidify his status as an action star.

Cruise has been, understandably, a little busy wrapping up his “Mission: Impossible” franchise. But now, the whispers have grown louder, and Jerry Bruckheimer, a producer on the original film, seems to be confirming its existence.

Tom Cruise ‘Has Phenomenal Ideas’ for ‘Days of Thunder 2’

At the New York premiere of “F1,” ET’s Nischelle Turner asked Jerry Bruckheimer about what they wanted to include in “Days of Thunder 2.” His answer affirmed that they were, indeed, trying to come up with a script.

“There’s always new technologies, new ways to do things, to see things,” Bruckheimer said. “And Tom is such a great individual to come up with phenomenal ideas. So we’ll have something really exciting for an audience once we pull it together.”

As they discussed further what he and Cruise wanted to bring to the film, Bruckheimer told her, “It’s always about the emotion. It’s always about the journey we take you on. The highs and the lows and the humor and the romance. We want it in our lives. We want that.”

As for whether watching Brad Pitt or Cruise race in films inspired him to get in a car, that answer was a hard no. “Not when I see how gifted these guys are,” the “Top Gun” producer said. “They’re so talented, it’s amazing. It looks so easy, but it’s not.”

Jeff Gordon Thinks ‘Days of Thunder 2’ Could Help NASCAR

While Formula 1 racing has seen an increase in fans, NASCAR has been working to attract more people to the sport. “We’re streaming. We’re on Amazon Prime,” NASCAR legend Jeff Gordon told Road & Track. “I think that’s another way that’s going to bring in more fans, younger fans — different fans that have never thought about NASCAR before.”

And, of course, Tom Cruise getting back into a NASCAR car wouldn’t hurt either. “I mean, all I can say is … I’ve known Tom [Cruise] for many years, and was on set this past year for “Mission: Impossible,” and then I went to the premiere,” Gordon said. “And the first word out of his mouth is, ‘We’re doing it. We’re doing “Days of Thunder 2.”

“Again, you look at things that can help grow the sport,” he continued. “Look what “Days of Thunder” did for NASCAR in the ’90s. I think it could very easily do the same if we were able to do this again.”
