John Brenkus, founder and host of ESPN’s “Sports Science,” passed away after a battle with depression. He was 54 years old.

The heartbreaking news was shared on his X account on Sunday, June 1, leaving fans and the sports world in shock.

It is with profound sadness that we share the news that John Brenkus has passed away.

John, co-founder of Base Productions, Founder of Brinx.TV, and co-creator and host of the six-time Emmy award-winning “Sport Science,” had been battling depression.

John lost his fight with this terrible illness on May 31, 2025.

His heartbroken family and friends request privacy at this time and encourage anyone who is struggling with depression to seek help.

“Sport Science” originally premiered on Fox Sports in 2007 before being picked up by ESPN in 2010. It earned a total of six Sports Emmy Awards since its debut.

John Brenkus battled depression for years.

Many of Brenkus’ colleagues and fans mourned his passing, sharing heartfelt tributes across social media.

ESPN honored Brenkus with a tribute, stating in part: “John Brenkus was an innovator, an entertainer, and an educator. He will be missed by many.”

ESPN’s  Adam Schefter wrote on X, “This is incredibly sad. John was so good at what he did. Sincerest condolences to his family and friends. Rest in peace, John.”

NBC Sports’ Matthew Berry also wrote via X, “I’m so incredibly sad to learn of the passing of John Brenkus. I did an episode of ‘Sport Science’ back in the day and we remained friends. The ultimate professional, he was kind, encouraging, smart and inventive. This is awful. RIP John Brenkus.”

Fans also expressed their grief over Brenkus’ passing, with some emphasizing the importance of mental health.

One fan commented, “Mental health is the most important aspect of life. Please talk to someone if you are feeling stressed, depressed or anxious.”

On January 2023, Brenkus opened up about his battle with depression and a past attempt to end his life. In an episode of Brinx.tv’s “Never Shut Up,” he recalled:

I was ready to do it. And my dog Zeppelin came to my rescue, literally pulled on my pants, on my jeans. Literally was going crazy, wouldn’t leave me alone.

Coming to his senses, Brenkus called his mom and said, “There’s something wrong with me,” admitting that he’s “mentally lost.”
