TV fans are already addicted to a brand new medieval drama starring Sean Bean – despite several of its biggest fans agreeing it’s ‘terrible’.
Robin Hood – starring the legendary Game of Thrones actor alongside Australian TV star Jack Patten – is produced by Lionsgate TV for MGM+ via Amazon Prime Video.
The series, which premiered on November 2, follows folk heroes Robin and Maid Marian – played by Lauren McQueen – during the Norman invasion of England.
Veteran actor Sean, 66, plays the Sheriff of Nottingham in the show, which comes from Ironclad writer Johnathan English and American screenwriter John Glenn.
The 10-part series, which also stars Lydia Peckham as Priscilla of Nottingham, will release weekly episodes until the season finale on December 28.
A synopsis reads: ‘Rob, a Saxon outlaw, and Marian, a Norman noblewoman, unite to fight injustice after the Norman conquest.
‘Rob leads a rebel band while she infiltrates the corrupt court, both striving for justice and peace.’
However, despite a broadly positive reaction since its premiere, a number of critics and some TV fans have started to file Robin Hood in the ‘so bad it’s good’ category.
In a review for The Guardian, TV critic Lucy Mangan said: ‘Look, by any objective measure Robin Hood is terrible. [But] subjectively? I couldn’t be having more fun.’

Lucy continued: ‘I suspect [my experience of having fun] will be the same for anyone who goes into it with the right attitude. If it’s not for you, fine.’
On Reddit, F1del1us agreed, saying, ‘Exactly how I felt about it,’ while JockFist5000 added: ‘Sometimes you just want slop. Lotta people eat fast food.’
Ricker888 concurred: ‘I’m always happy they make these Robin Hood shows or similar. Are they great? Probably not. But at least this looks well made and notable actors. I’m not going to nitpick. Keep this genre coming.’

How many episodes? 10
Where to stream: MGM+, Amazon Prime Video
However, the series does currently have an 80% rating on Rotten Tomatoes – though that score is only based on five reviews, none of which are from The Guardian.
The series has a much lower score of 6.0 out of 10 on IMDb, based on 355 user ratings, with many reviews citing the show’s historical inaccuracies as reasons to avoid the show.
That didn’t put off Reddit user DarkChiles: ‘I’m intrigued with the story they are trying to tell and after the first two episodes i’m definitely going to continue to watch (historical inaccuracies be damned lol!)’
BruceLee51 added: ‘First episode was pretty good. I enjoyed it. If you like that time and the story of Robinhood, then it’s good. Fresh faces with some old school stars.’
It’s not yet known whether a second season will be commissioned.
