Clara Nery robbery attempt

Clara Nery, a reporter for Brazil’s Band Rio network, was moments away from going live in Rio de Janeiro when a man on a motorcycle attempted to snatch her phone, while the camera kept rolling. “In the video, you can see the moment he puts his hand on my phone and takes it from me. Luckily, I was holding on tightly,” Nery recalled, according to Band Rio.

Fortunately for Clara Nery, the attempted robbery failed. The would-be thief dropped the phone mid-escape, allowing her to recover the device unharmed.

“Luckily, and despite his lack of skill, I managed to retrieve the phone,” Nery said, adding, “But we already have the security camera footage — the camera that managed to focus on his face.”

Later that day, Nery opened up about the ordeal in a candid Instagram post.

“It was a real scare to go live,” Clara wrote. “But the important thing is that everything turned out okay!”

She extended her gratitude to those who reached out following the incident. “Thanks for the messages and support from my coworkers, the Military Police, and the Civil Police,” she shared.

Call for Public Help

Following the incident, Rio de Janeiro’s Military Police searched the surrounding area, though the suspect was not located. According to MailOnline, surveillance footage captured a clear image of the man’s face, which is now being reviewed as part of the ongoing investigation.

Band network also reported that the motorbike’s license plate had been obscured with a piece of cardboard, making identification more difficult.

Alongside her thanks, Clara Nery made a public appeal for help identifying the suspect. “Let’s share his face, he wants to be known,” she wrote.

Phone Thefts Surge in Rio

The incident comes amid a concerning spike in mobile phone thefts in Brazil. According to the Rio de Janeiro Public Security Institute, over 2,300 phones were reported stolen in June 2025 — a 27% increase compared to 1,808 thefts during the same month last year.

A Similar Incident: TV Crew Robbed Mid-Broadcast in Adelaide While Covering Crime Spike

A live TV segment in Adelaide took an ironic twist when a thief made off with broadcast equipment, right in the middle of a report on rising crime. Channel Seven’s Hayden Nelson was filming a segment on crime rates at local shopping centers for the Sunrise morning show when the unexpected happened.

While on location at Rundle Mall, a man approached the crew, casually greeted them, and quietly stole a light from their setup, without anyone noticing.

Later on-air, Nelson recounted the moment, saying, “To give you an idea of just how brazen some of the crime is, this morning after our last live cross, someone came and took the light off our light stand.” He added, “We have about three lights here, and they just pulled it blatantly off and walked away with it. So, any need for security and calls for police were certainly made clear for us this morning.”
