Two beloved 2000s movies confirm sequels with Oscar winning legends returning

Two of the 2000s most beloved movies are set to return with brand-new sequels to The Devil Wears Prada and The Princess Diaries.

What’s more, original stars Anne Hathaway (who starred in both films) and Meryl Streep are expected to return, alongside The Devil Wears Prada’s Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci.

For those who somehow missed out on these cultural behemoths the first time around, The Princess Diaries starred Hathaway as aspiring journalist Andy Sachs. Taking a job as an assistant to fashion designer Miranda Priestly (Streep), Andy finds herself at the mercy of the titular Prada-wearing devil.

Meanwhile, released in 2001, the coming-of-age film The Princess Diaries starred Anne as teenage Mia – who discovers that she’s heir to the throne of a small European state after her long-lost father dies.

The film spawned a 2004 sequel, subtitled Royal Engagement, in which Mia learned that she needed to tie the knot if she ever wanted to take the throne. Another sequel was mooted as far back as 2015, but nothing panned out… until now.

Busy star Anne had better clear her diary – as sequels were finally confirmed this week for both movies.

While nothing has been officially confirmed, Harper’s Bazaar reported that a sequel to The Devil Wears Prada has begun pre-production – with shooting expected to begin on November 30.

According to sources, all principal members of the cast are expected to return – including Anne, Meryl, Stanley Tucci and Emily Blunt. Original director David Frankel is said to be in consideration to helm the sequel, along with screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna and producer Wendy Finerman.

According to Puck magazine, the sequel will focus on the decline of print media in a changing world.

Meanwhile, Anne has also revealed that The Princess Diaries will also return for a third entry in the series.

The film’s star shared the exciting news in an Instagram post on Friday, sharing a short video with the caption: ‘Miracles happen ✨👑 Back to Genovia with @adeleblim @disney @somewherepictures. The fairy tale continues ❤️‍🔥’

Adele Lim, who directed Crazy Rich Asians and Joy Ride will direct, with Anne starring and producing.

‘As a diehard fan of the original Princess Diaries, I’m beyond excited to be a part of bringing the third iteration of this beloved franchise to life,’ said director Adele. ‘We look forward to celebrating its core tenants of female power, joy and mentorship with audiences worldwide.’

The Devil Wears Prada sequel and The Princess Diaries 3 join a long line of legacy sequels set for release in the coming years. Here are just a few sequels fans can look forward to seeing:

Join Paddington in Peru for the third entry in the popular series (Picture: Studiocanal)

Paddington in Peru

Next month will see the release of the eagerly-anticipated Paddington in Peru – the third entry in the beloved family-friendly film series.

As the title suggests, its story follows Paddington Bear (played by Ben Wishaw) as he pays a visit to his aunt Lucy in Peru, accompanied by his adoptive family, the Browns.

Needless to say, chaos ensues.

Join Moana on a second adventure in November (Picture: Disney)

Moana 2

Also set for release in November is Moana 2, the sequel to 2016’s animated adventure which starred Auliʻi Cravalho as the gutsy young hero.

Its story will see Moana return to the seas after receiving a call to action from her ancient ancestors – setting her on a course to distant Oceania along with demigod Maui (Dwayne Johnson) and calamitous chicken Heihei (Alan Tudyk).

Moana 2 is just one of many Disney sequels and prequels in development, with Mufasa: The Lion King, Zootopia 2 and Frozen 3 all on their way.

Toy Story 5

Meanwhile, Woody, Buzz and the remnants of Andy’s toybox will return for a fourth Toy Story sequel in 2026.

The animated adventure will follow the toys as they reckon with an all-new threat to playtime – technology, and children’s increasing disinterest in physical toys.

Tom Hanks and Tim Allen will reprise their roles as the spaceman and the cowboy, with WALL-E and Finding Dory director Andrew Stanton at the helm.

Adam Sandler will reprise his role as Happy Gilmore, almost thirty years since the first film’s release (Picture: AI Creation)

Happy Gilmore 2

In less family-friendly territory, Adam Sandler will return for another outing as angry golfer Happy Gilmore in a sequel to the crude 1996 sports comedy.

Modern Family star Julie Bowen will also return as Virginia Venit, while Margaret Qualley and Travis Kelce are among the newer members of the cast.
