“Top Gun” actor Val Kilmer died on April 1, 2025 at the age of 65, according to the BBC. The report says he succumbed to pneumonia after having survived a throat cancer battle in 2014.
Kilmer shot to fame in the 1980s with a few comedy roles, before cementing his status as a ’90s icon with roles in nostalgic films such as “True Romance,” “Heat,” and “Batman Forever.”

Val Kilmer Made His Last Social Media Post on March 22
Val Kilmer appeared to be an art enthusiast, and his final social media post was a picture of a colorful abstract painting.
Kilmer captioned the picture “It’s got that late-night glow. Cool tones with a low burn, like when the camp fire cools down but you’re still wide awake.” He also described the dimensions of the piece, which appeared to be for sale on his website, although no paintings seem to be currently available as of April 2. “12” x 20″ plexi-glazed, signed, and ready to hang,” Kilmer wrote, before leaving a link to his website.
One thing that is still for sale on the site is a “Val Kilmer Exclusive Doc Holliday Hat,” which is going for $895. The item is listed next to a description that calls it “a creative collaboration between Val Kilmer & Tom Hirt, the official hat maker for the film Tombstone.” The listing goes on to explain that “The distinctive “Doc Holliday” front curl cannot be duplicated and reflects the actual hat worn by Val Kilmer in the film Tombstone. Each hat takes up to 5 weeks to complete from start to finish.”
Doc Holliday is the character Kilmer played in “Tombstone,” the 1993 Western in which he starred alongside Kurt Russell.
In a 2024 GQ interview, Russell revealed the gifts he exchanged with Kilmer on the set, in a tradition he says was customary at the time. Russell recalled, “I asked my driver to see if he could get ahold of Val’s holster and gun and hat, and chair with his name on the back, take a picture. And then in that picture, I wanted to have this thing. The actor went on, “It’s the end of the show, and it’s been a battle and we’ve all, you know, gotten through it very well.”
Russell said after giving his costar the gift, Wilmer turned to his driver and said, “Give it to me.” Russell explained, “Because what I had gotten Val was a plot at Boot Hill. What Val had gotten me was an acre of land overlooking Boot Hill,” referencing the world famous Wild West cemetery in Arizona. He then laughed, “Doc Holliday is all about death, but Wyatt’s all about life.”
Val Kilmer Reacted to Los Angeles Wildfires With “LOVE” Paintings
Months before his death, Val Kilmer sold paintings to spread goodwill after the disastrous wildfires that devastated Los Angeles in early 2025.
A post on his Facebook page read, “We’re all in need of a little love right now. No matter where you are (but particularly in Los Angeles) a gesture of love is always appreciated. So, here are two gestures of LOVE for the loves of your lives (even if one of those loves is yourself), newly minted prints of two of my LOVE paintings in time for Valentine’s day, or just because you want to let someone know how you feel.
The actor added “The Beatles were right” before signing off with, “Love, Val.”
