A hidden gem horror film on Netflix has been described as a movie that will leave viewers ‘uncomfortable’ and on the edge of their seats until its ‘mindboggling’ ending.

And that’s if they can stick with it.

The Block Island Sound is an American science fiction horror thriller which originally impressed on the festival circuit and was awarded a very impressive 90% on review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes by critics.

It premiered on Netflix in 2021 before being physically released earlier this month in some markets in 4K on Blu-ray, spurring on more people to seek it out on the streaming platform too.

In the movie, something lurks off the coast of Block Island, killing wildlife and silently influencing the behaviour of the locals, including fisherman Tom Lynch (Neville Archambault). After suffering a series of violent outbursts, he unknowingly puts his family in grave danger.

Written and directed by Kevin and Matthew McManus and filmed at the real-life location, just south of mainland Rhode Island, it also stars The Maze Runner’s Chris Sheffield, Michaela McManus, Jim Cummings and Matilda Lawler.

Reviews praised it as ‘a genre-defying masterpiece’ and ‘hauntingly wonderful’.

‘If you’re expecting a monster movie, you might be disappointed at the lack of blood and guts, but if you’ll open your mind, The Block Island Sound just might scare the hell out of you,’ suggested ScreenAnarchy.

Fans agreed, with Wihan Hendrikz warning on Google: ‘If you come to see a creature feature and gore, don’t watch this film. If you come for atmosphere and an utterly human experience of the unknowable, this is just the movie for you!’

‘This film beautifully dealt with its mystery so that even at the end, I’m not convinced I know what really happened,’ they added.

Brian Evans praised The Block Island Sound as ‘viciously uncomfortable’ as it ‘harps on your fear of the unknown nearly constantly’.

‘Not only does it keep you on edge the entire time, it also keeps you second guessing yourself.’

Meanwhile Carl Sedon picked up influences from David Lynch in the horror flick’s sense of suspense and mystery.

In fact, many viewers admitted they were flummoxed at some points, with Liam McCue writing in his five-star audience review on Rotten Tomatoes: ‘WOW very creepy slow burn movie [sic]. I will say I was looking in the wrong direction the whole time!’

‘This film is weird and brilliant. Something different. I was captured from start to finish. Give it a go,’ urged Sparky K on the same site.

‘A little gem, a film that for its first part will leave you uncertain whether it’s about a mystery, or some paranormal activity, or a story of mental illness, while building up faultlessly towards an ending that is pure genius. Bravo!’ another review proclaimed.

The Block Island Sound is streaming now on Netflix.
