Leonardo DiCaprioâs road to stardom didnât begin with instant success. Before his rise as one of Hollywoodâs biggest names, he was a young actor auditioning for small roles in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
Long before “Titanic” or “The Wolf of Wall Street”, DiCaprio auditioned for “The Outsiders” TV series at just 16 years old. The show, based on S. E. Hintonâs 1967 novel and Francis Ford Coppolaâs 1983 film, followed a group of Greasers in rural Oklahoma.

In a resurfaced audition clip, DiCaprio reads for the role of Ponyboy, showing the raw talent and intensity that would later define his career. Actor David Arquette recalled that DiCaprio impressed everyone in the room but ultimately looked âa little too youngâ for the role.
Although the opportunity slipped by, it didnât hold him back. Just a year later, DiCaprio landed a recurring role in “Growing Pains” and went on to star in “Poison Ivy” and “Whatâs Eating Gilbert Grape”.
By the end of the 1990s, he had become one of Hollywoodâs most bankable leading men.
Although DiCaprio appeared too young for the lead role of Ponyboy, his raw talent stood out. His audition left a strong impression, and he was ultimately cast in a smaller role for the 90-minute pilot episode.
Directed by Sharron Miller, the pilot aired on Fox in 1990 and drew roughly 14 million viewers, becoming the networkâs highest-rated drama at the time.
Though DiCaprioâs screen time was brief, it marked an important early milestone, a quiet glimpse of the star he was about to become. Just a few years later, his breakout performance in Whatâs Eating Gilbert Grape? at age 19 would earn him his first Oscar nomination and officially launch his path to Hollywood greatness.

The 2013 film, directed by Martin Scorsese, also starred Margot Robbie, Jonah Hill, and Matthew McConaughey. It earned DiCaprio his fourth Academy Award nomination and remains one of his most celebrated performances.
