Vin Diesel wheeled Michael Caine onto the red carpet at the opening night of the Red Sea International Film Festival, creating the most emotional moment of the evening. The appearance came shortly after Variety reported that Caine may come out of retirement at 92 to star again with Diesel in âThe Last Witch Hunter 2.â
If confirmed, it would be Caineâs first film since retiring in 2023 at age 90.
Diesel Honors Caine With Heartfelt Tribute on Stage
Inside the venue, Diesel took the stage to present Caine with his honoree award.
Before the introduction, he joked to jury president Sean Baker, âYouâre making us all want to make independent movies,â and repeated his well-known quip from last year: âYou see more people from Hollywood here [in Jeddah] than at the Oscars.â
Diesel praised Caine as âone of the best actors whoâs ever lived,â adding that he carries âmore charisma in his finger than most people in Hollywood.â
Caineâs Emotional Acceptance Speech Moves the Audience
Caine received a standing ovation as he reached the stage with three of his grandchildren beside him. âIâm here to get an award, which doesnât surprise me. I won two Oscars,â he joked as the crowd applauded.
Reflecting on his long career, he said, âI kept going until I was 90, which is two years ago. Iâm not going to do anything else, Iâve had all the luck I can get.â
He added, âOne of the luckiest things is tonight. Iâve seen it on television but never won anything here, so Iâm happy. I want to thank you for the surprise, because in show business you donât get many surprises, you get a couple of shocks, and thatâs about it.â
His wife, Shakira Caine, and his daughters, Dominique and Natasha, watched with pride from the audience.
A Seven-Decade Legacy and a Possible Return to Screen
Caineâs tribute capped a career spanning more than 60 years, including landmark performances in âAlfie,â âGet Carter,â âThe Man Who Would Be King,â âHannah and Her Sisters,â âDirty Rotten Scoundrelsâ and the âThe Dark Knightâ trilogy.
He retired after âThe Great Escaper,â citing mobility issues from spinal stenosis and a desire to close his career on a high note.
With talk of âThe Last Witch Hunter 2,â fans are watching closely to see whether the legendary actor will make one final return.
The opening night also welcomed Dakota Johnson, Uma Thurman, Ana de Armas, Queen Latifah, Riz Ahmed, Naomie Harris, and more. Yet it was Caineâs reunion with Diesel and his moving tribute that defined the festivalâs first night and drew the strongest audience response.
