Inside the venue, Diesel took the stage to present Caine with his honoree award.

Before the introduction, he joked to jury president Sean Baker, “You’re making us all want to make independent movies,” and repeated his well-known quip from last year: “You see more people from Hollywood here [in Jeddah] than at the Oscars.”

Diesel praised Caine as “one of the best actors who’s ever lived,” adding that he carries “more charisma in his finger than most people in Hollywood.”

Caine received a standing ovation as he reached the stage with three of his grandchildren beside him. “I’m here to get an award, which doesn’t surprise me. I won two Oscars,” he joked as the crowd applauded.

Reflecting on his long career, he said, “I kept going until I was 90, which is two years ago. I’m not going to do anything else, I’ve had all the luck I can get.”

He added, “One of the luckiest things is tonight. I’ve seen it on television but never won anything here, so I’m happy. I want to thank you for the surprise, because in show business you don’t get many surprises, you get a couple of shocks, and that’s about it.”

His wife, Shakira Caine, and his daughters, Dominique and Natasha, watched with pride from the audience.

Caine’s tribute capped a career spanning more than 60 years, including landmark performances in “Alfie,” “Get Carter,” “The Man Who Would Be King,” “Hannah and Her Sisters,” “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” and the “The Dark Knight” trilogy.

He retired after “The Great Escaper,” citing mobility issues from spinal stenosis and a desire to close his career on a high note.

With talk of “The Last Witch Hunter 2,” fans are watching closely to see whether the legendary actor will make one final return.

The opening night also welcomed Dakota Johnson, Uma Thurman, Ana de Armas, Queen Latifah, Riz Ahmed, Naomie Harris, and more. Yet it was Caine’s reunion with Diesel and his moving tribute that defined the festival’s first night and drew the strongest audience response.
