As per Cosby’s statement to Complex, he said: “He’s devastated and it’s a sad day. As a fan of the Cosby show every young boyâs dream was to be Theo (Malcolm-Jamal Warner) and have a family like the Huxtable’s,” the statement read. “However, that dream came true when God gave me the honor and pleasure to represent Mr. Cosby. I got to do it for the culture just like to The Cosby Show saved many cultures.”
Warner died of asphyxia after being caught in a strong ocean current while vacationing with his family in Costa Rica, according to TMZ. He was 54. The beloved actor is survived by his wife and young daughter, whose identities he chose to keep private throughout his life.

He shared the deep love he found in family life, reflecting on his marriage and journey into fatherhood.
Of his wife, whom he revealed he married in 2017, Warner said, “At some point during this time⦠I was like, ‘If I’m going to have a kid, this is the person that I would want to have it with.’”
Even early in their relationship, Warner, who chose to keep his wife’s identity private, knew heâd found someone special. “If something happened and we weren’t together romantically, she would still be the person that I would want to raise a child with,” he said.
“I’ve never, never second-guessed it [since]. There was a moment where I realized when people say, ‘When you know, you know,’ that’s what that feeling is.”
He went on to share that in nearly a decade together, they maintained a rare level of peace and respect. “We have never second-guessed it. We’ve been together almost 10 years and we have never had a fight, an argument, a raised voice, or a harsh word said to one another â¦. And it’s not like we agree on everything.”
Warner also opened up about life with their 8-year-old daughter, recalling the sweet moment they began watching The Cosby Show together when she was just four.
“She said, ‘That’s Papa! That’s Papa!’” he said, cherishing the memory.
