Steve Martin & Martin Short Sing to Diane Keaton During AFI Tribute Event
Following Keaton’s death on October 11, 2025, there have been a flood of tributes to the late actress. A video posted on X of Short and Martin singing to her at an event is a touching reminder of their friendship.
Martin and Short were among the celebrities honoring the actress at the 2017 American Film Instituteâs 45th AFI Life Achievement Award Gala Tribute to Diane Keaton.
They serenaded the actress, singing “The Way You Look Tonight” from the 1991 movie “Father of the Bride.” Martin and Keaton played husband and wife George and Nina Banks, while Short played eccentric wedding coordinator Franck Eggelhoffer.
“Here’s a little tune that Steve and I love from ‘Father of the Bride,’” Short said while perched atop a piano.
Short sang the first verse as Martin played the piano. When Martin started the next verse, he sang, “Yes, you’re lovely …” and Short interjected, “Thank you!” which got a big laugh from the audience, including Keaton.
“No, I’m kidding, go on,” Short said. Martin continued to sing, then Short joined him as they finished the song together.
Fans lit up the comments section of the post, noting how magical the moment was.
“The three of them are a gift to this world. May our dearest Diane rest in peace forever,” one fan wrote.
Another noted, “That moment felt like time stopped, two legends serenading another. Pure storytelling without words, just connection. You can almost see decades of friendship woven into every note.”
On October 11, Martin posted a tribute to Keaton on Instagram that highlighted an exchange during an interview. Short asked the actress, “Who’s sexier, me or Steve Martin?”
She answered, “I mean, you’re both idiots.”
Martin noted in the caption: “Don’t know who first posted this, but it sums up our delightful relationship with Diane.”
