Wednesday fans have cause for mass celebration and widespread complaint after the trailer for season two dropped on Friday.

The Netflix coming-of-age mystery series, starring Jenna Ortega in the titular role, was one of the streaming giant’s biggest hits of 2022 – it is currently the most-watched Netflix series of all time with a staggering 252,100,000 views.

It follows Wednesday Addams as she’s enrolled at Nevermore Academy – a private school for outcast children with supernatural powers – by her parents Morticia and Gomez.

Produced by Tim Burton, the series also starred Game of Thrones actress Gwendoline Christie and Emma Myers, as well as 1990s Wednesday icon Christina Ricci.

Fans have been eagerly awaiting its return after a second season was confirmed in January 2023, and a new teaser trailer released by Netflix has confirmed Wednesday will be back…

But not until 2025.

While some fans were delighted that Jenna, 21, would be back on our screens playing the eponymous hero, many others were despondent at the wait for more episodes.

On X, @RoxieCat said, ‘2025? Ugh, it just seems so far away!’ while @SJP_V asked the official Wednesday account, ‘Why do we have to wait so long?’

@BigMadibb3 took their complaint one step further, however, taking aiming at the industry: ‘I hate the TV industry so much now. Wait two or three years for eight episodes like, I’m over it.’

Meanwhile, @HisFanGirl_P warned the show’s producers that they needed to hurry up: ‘Better this be in one half of 2025 cause it’s tough to wait now!’

Other users noted that, when the series was renewed in January 2023, many viewers expected an October 2024 release date to coincide with Halloween.

The teaser showed that at least some of season two will take place at Nevermore Academy, with the instantly recognisable purple and black striped uniforms appearing throughout.

Shots also confirmed the returns of Emma Myers as Enid Sinclair, Catherine Zeta-Jones as Morticia, and Luis Guzman as Gomez, with Tim Burton also down to direct four more episodes of the series.

When it debuted on Netflix in 2022, Wednesday quickly became the second-most watched English language show in the history of the streaming platform and is currently the most popular.

Wednesday also performed well at awards ceremonies, with Jenna Ortega receiving several acting nominations while the series itself was recognised in both horror and fantasy categories.

The three-year wait between seasons for Wednesday, likely caused by the Hollywood writers’ strike, means that 2025 will be a huge year for Netflix, with Stranger Things also coming to an end next year.

Fans of the sci-fi phenomenon got a glimpse onto the set of their favourite series over the summer, with actors Finn Wolfhard and Noah Schnapp seen riding bicycles on set.

Also affected by the writers’ strike, Stranger Things’ fifth and final outing was also significantly delayed, with the last eight episodes expected to debut some time next year.

Watch Wednesday on Netflix.
