Channel 4’s new gameshow The Inheritance debuted last night – but a big twist in Sunday night’s first episode left viewers feeling baffled.

The new reality series, hosted by Rob Rinder and featuring none other than Liz Hurley too, sees 13 contestants battling it out to claim huge cash prizes.

Each of the hopefuls are summoned to a stately home (sound familiar?) where Liz Hurley’s character has died, leaving behind a massive inheritance ready to be claimed.

Players will compete in tasks – if those tasks are completed, a sum of money is released from the estate of The Deceased (played by Liz).

However, only ‘the most cunning’ of contestants get to walk away with the cash at the end of each episode – and that’s where the details of the game come in.

Each of the 13 contestants has to convince the other 12 players that they deserve the cash over everyone else, while deceit, twists and turns, and betrayal threaten to surprise viewers along the way.

It appears that one of these twists has caught fans off-guard already, with those watching at home expecting a Traitors-style bloodbath the end of the first episode – only to be denied one.

@RinaReenaRae commented on X: ‘The premise of The Inheritance sounded really good, but it’s not really flowing very well. Each task someone gets money. Then what? They stay in the game? They go home? Is there a big cash prize? What is happening?’

@RealityTV asked: ‘Does no-one get eliminated?’ to which @ChatGPetey responded: ‘The trailer for rest of season referenced cutting people from the will. But doesn’t seem a regular thing every episode?’

Meanwhile, @St_ua_rt was less than impressed: ‘I’m not sold on The Inheritance. Was hoping for more gameplay and twists, but the first episode seemed a bit simple and inconsequential?’

@SuperTV247 also expected more action: The Inheritance just being The Traits but with even longer challenges and even fewer eliminations…’

The description provided by Channel 4 explains that in this ‘cutthroat game of wit, willpower, and persuasion’, it’s all about which hopeful can outcharm their way to the very top.

It sounds like viewers will eventually get their wish for eliminations in future episodes, with 11 more to come after Sunday night’s premiere – The Inheritance is made by the same team behind The Traitors, which surely suggests that drama will follow.

The second episode goes out on Monday night at 9pm, with Channel 4 promising that The Deceased as a ‘rather unsavoury’ request for the challengers.

A synopsis teaser for the third episode has promised a ‘bombshell’ which viewers will be hoping implies an elimination before the show goes on a break of four days, returning for episode four on September 7.

Speaking about the show with Metro, Rob Rinder, who plays The Executor, talked about working with Liz for her role as The Deceased: ‘Often, when you make people meet people who you’ve written an entire novel about in your head, they fall short.

‘Your imagined novel is always infinitely more fabulous than it could ever be. Turns out, not a bit of it. She exceeds expectations. She really did. I mean, I’m not just saying it was, it was fascinating. She’s like that last bastion of effortless aristocracy.’
