For more than two decades, Matt Lauer was a constant figure on television. Whether it was anchoring NBC’s “Today” or hosting the network’s Olympic Games coverage, Layer was perhaps one of the most recognizable figures in households across the country.

That all came to an end in 2017, with Lauer leaving his role at NBC when his contract was terminated. But what has the news anchor been up to since then? Sources close to him have provided some details about Lauer’s recent life.

According to People, a source close to Lauer has given some insight into his current state of affairs. The source confirmed that the former news anchor is “doing well in his private life” and “wants to get back into the media arena in some capacity, if not TV.”

The source continued by saying,  “He has talked to some people about it.”

Providing more updates about what Lauer has been up to and what he is currently doing, the insider revealed that he has mostly been living in and around the Hamptons in New York. However, he does visit his native New Zealand frequently as well.

People also reported the source as saying that Lauer is happy with his life, although he remains “angry” with “the way he was treated by the industry” and “people he thought were his friends.”

Lauer is also seemingly still in a relationship with publicist Shamin Abas and is spending a lot of his time with his family. He shares three children with his former wife Annette Roque. The source indicates that much of his focus is on being “good father” to his kids and “spending time with them.”

Since his firing in 2017, Lauer has largely stayed out of public life, choosing instead to keep out the spotlight and love privately with his family. Yet, he has been spotted at some public events, including the wedding of Don Lemon back in 2024.

Another source with apparent inside information about Lauer’s life also recently spoke to Page Six about a possible return to television.

There have been rumors for several years that Lauer is seeking an opportunity to revive his career and once again take up hosting duties.

The source revealed that his “savvy publicist girlfriend,” Shamin Abas, has been working hard to keep Lauer’s name out there and push him forward to attempt a comeback.

“She is encouraging him to keep trying and she is definitely persistent. There have been instances of second and third acts with other stars, so they think people will give him a chance,” the source said.
