“28 Years Later” is one of the most highly anticipated films of 2025. This is especially the case when it comes to zombie movies. It’s been almost 20 years since the second movie in the horror franchise, and many are wondering if the new installment will be worth the wait.Â
So far, director Danny Boyle’s “28 Years Later” is doing quite well in regards to early reviews. It currently holds a certified fresh 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. At the time of writing, this is based on 95 reviews.Â
One top critic from the site, Perri Nemiroff, said, “Not only is 28 Years Later well worth the wait, but the story benefits from the lengthy gap between installments. It delivers big with Rage Virus-sparked tension and action, but also takes an unexpected turn that’s staggeringly refreshing and effective.”
According to Bill Goodykoontz, “Boyle controls every frame — donât let the mind-bending chaos of the chase scenes fool you. This is a technical marvel.”
Still, some critics don’t believe “28 Years Later” ranks among the best zombie movies. Stephen Silver remarked, “There are several things wrong here, from a cruddy visual style to incoherent action scenes to a listless lead performance.”
Another reviewer on Rotten Tomatoes, Hilary A. White, said, “Boyle and Garland[the writer] are obviously entitled to add a smirk or two, but they can have no complaints if the muddled tone flies over the heads of audience members.”
The New Film Didn’t Use Conventional Cameras
People who have already seen “28 Years Later” are remarking on its visual quality. Some love it, and others think it looks a bit dated. However, what many may not know is that at least some of the film was shot using Apple iPhones.
This information was confirmed to Wired, and the production specifically used the Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max. Of course, this isn’t the first film in the series to use unconventional cameras. The first one, “28 Days Later,” utilized a Canon XL-1, which was valued at approximately $4,000 at the time.Â
Other well-known productions have also utilized the Apple iPhone for filming. “Tangerine” from 2015 and “Unsane” from 2018 used the popular smartphone for their productions. Notably, Lady Gaga used an iPhone for the music video for her 2020 single, “Stupid Love.”
There Is a Part Two for “28 Years Later”
Like several movies these days, there is a follow-up to “28 Years Later.” This one, “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple,” will hit theatres on January 16th, 2026. The film is also from Sony Pictures Releasing, but Nia DaCosta directed it. Reports say the two films were shot back-to-back.
“28 Years Later” hits theatres on June 20th.
