’Wicked: For Good’ Star Reveals her Steamy Reading Habits

'Wicked: For Good' Star Reveals Her Current Reading Obsession

Fans first saw Cynthia Erivo’s Elphaba turn the pages of the Grimmerie when “Wicked” debuted to audiences worldwide in November 2024. Since then, the Emmy, Grammy and Tony Award-winning (and Oscar nominated!) actress and singer has taken the world by storm, hand-in-hand with her “Wicked” co-lead, Ariana Grande. Now, the witchy duo is preparing for the release of the film’s sequel, “Wicked: For Good,” which is set to hit theaters on November 21, 2025.

But what else is on Erivo’s bookshelves besides her numerous awards? The star opened up about her reading habits and her current book obsession during an appearance on “The Comment Section” podcast with Drew Afualo.

In addition to discussing Erivo’s career on screen, on stage, and in the recording booth for her recently released debut album “I Forgive You,” Afualo probed the star on her favorite books, recalling that Erivo had previously praised Rebecca Yaros’ 2023 novel “Fourth Wing.”

Erivo echoed her love of the book, as well as its sequel novel “Iron Flame.” The series, which is currently being adapted for the screen by Prime Video, follows the journey of Violet Sorrengail, a student and dragon rider at the fictional Basgiath War College.

The series is often associated with other popular romantic fantasy novels like Sarah J. Maas’ “A Court of Thorns and Roses,” a series that Erivo herself references in the interview, saying “I haven’t begun [reading it], and I need to.”

While “A Court of Thorns and Roses” and “Fourth Wing” oftentimes receive a bad wrap in literary circles, Erivo reacted to the popular romantic-fantasy series with a single word: “Love.”

“Come on,” added the actress. “Let’s be honest. It’s good…You know it’s good.”

Ervio Has a Long History of Page-to-Screen Adaptations

Over the course of her illustrious career, Erivo has starred in a number of projects, both on stage and on screen, that found their original inspiration in books, including “Wicked.” While the 2024 film, and its upcoming sequel, were adapted from the Broadway musical of the same name, the musical itself was based off of Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel “Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West.”

Eviro’s award-winning performance in the 2015 Broadway revival of “The Color Purple,” was similarly based on a book – Alice Walker’s 1982 novel of the same name.

The trend is set to continue as Erivo prepares to appear in Paramount Pictures’ “Children of Blood and Bone.” The feature film, set to premiere in 2027, is based on the best-selling young adult novel of the same name written by Tomi Adeyemi.

Set in a fantasy world inspired by African mythology, the film will similarly feature actors like Viola Davis, Amandla Stenberg, Idris Elba and Lashana Lynch. Erivo will portray Admiral Kaea in the forthcoming film from director Gina Prince Blythewood.

Speaking of the action-fantasy role, Erivo previously told Deadline: “I love the character that I’m playing. I never do things twice, so this is not a woman you’ve seen me play before. I’m so excited.”

Fans can catch Cynthia Erivo in “Children of Blood and Bone” when it hits theatres on January 15, 2027, and in the highly-anticipated “Wicked: For Good” with Ariana Grande on November 21, 2025.
