During a recent appearance on the MeSsy podcast with Christina Applegate and Jamie-Lynn Sigler, Ferrell shared a lighthearted story from his childhood that still makes him cringe.

He revealed that his legal name is John William Ferrell, which often led to confusion at school. “I remember feeling so embarrassed because my real name is John,” he said. “The teacher would call out, ‘John Ferrell?’ and I’d have to say, ‘Here, but I go by Will.’”

The Elf star continued, “It wasn’t my choice. My parents named me John, but they called me Will. I grew up as Will, but on every school form, my legal name was John Ferrell. I don’t know why it embarrassed me so much to explain.”

With a laugh, he added, “People are probably going to hear this and think, ‘That’s the lamest thing ever.’”

Ferrell Keeps His Trademark Humor Alive

Ferrell, who studied sports broadcasting at the University of Southern California, recently reflected on a playful moment from his Netflix comedy “Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga.”

In the film, he snuck in a good-natured jab at USC’s longtime rival, Arizona State University. “That was Pac-12 fellowship right there,” he joked to Screen Rant, as reported by The Daily Mail. “That was also a perfect party school to make fun of. At USC, we’re graduates of a fine academic institution now.”

Ferrell starred in “Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga” as Lars Erickssong, an aspiring Eurovision singer, alongside Pierce Brosnan, who played his father.
