The witchy aunties are officially back. After more than 25 years, Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing are returning to the world of “Practical Magic,” reuniting with Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman for a sequel thatâs been quietly conjuring in the background.
Wiest and Channing Reprise Their Iconic Roles
Warner Bros. confirmed what fans had been hoping for: Wiest and Channing will return as the eccentric, no-nonsense aunts who helped raise the Owens sisters in the original 1998 film. Wiest, a two-time Oscar winner known for “Hannah and Her Sisters” and “The Birdcage,” played Aunt Jet. Channing, who received an Oscar nod for “Six Degrees of Separation” and stole hearts as Rizzo in “Grease,” portrayed Aunt Frances.
Theyâll be reuniting with Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, who return as Sally and Gillian Owensâtwo sisters bound by blood and a family curse. âI just love that we made something that was embraced this wayâitâs so rareâand that we get to do it again,â Kidman previously said. âBut câmon, we are witches! We will work our magic.â
“Yes I will be in it. And Sandy will be in it. And that’s that,” she laughed, confirming her return to People. “There’s a lot more to tell which is why we go, ‘OK, this is kind of interesting now to be able to do this.’”
The project, based on Alice Hoffmanâs “The Book of Magic,” will be directed by “Bird Boxâs” Susanne Bier, with a screenplay co-written by Akiva Goldsmanâwho also co-wrote the originalâand “Successionâs” Georgia Pritchett.
New Cast Members and One Notable Absence for ‘Practical Magic 2’
Also joining the magical universe are Lee Pace (“Bodies Bodies Bodies”), Maisie Williams (“Game of Thrones”), Xolo Maridueña (“Blue Beetle”), Solly McLeod (“The Dead Donât Hurt”), and Joey King (“The Act”), according to Deadline. While specific character details are still under wraps, the sequel promises a mix of new energy and old-school enchantment.
One familiar face who wonât return? Evan Rachel Wood. The actress, who played Sallyâs daughter Kylie in the original film, revealed in a June 11 Instagram Stories post that she wasnât asked back. âI offered my services, even if it was one scene or one line,â Wood wrote. âI was told they are recasting, I am sorry to disappoint the fans. It was not in my control or my choice. I would have happily rejoined my sisters.â
The original “Practical Magic” fell short commercially, grossing $68.3 million worldwide on a $75 million budgetâbut its strong cult following over the years has been enough to warrant a sequel.
Midnight margaritas are back on the menu when “Practical Magic 2” hits theaters on September 18, 2026.
