WWE champion ‘quits company’ and will leave when contract expires this summer

WWE superstar Ricochet is reportedly set to leave the company at the end of his contract this summer.

The innovative 35-year-old high flyer – who joined WWE in 2018 – is said to have handed in his notice and will quit the wrestling giant when his current deal expires over the coming weeks.

It’s thought the current Speed Champion will be ‘written out’ of storyline in the very near future, and removed from television ‘in advance of the contract expiration’.

As reported by PWInsider, Ricochet has made it known to bosses that he won’t be staying, bringing an end to his six-year tenure, which has included runs with the Intercontinental and United States Titles on the main roster.

A source told the outlet they gave him ‘all the credit in the world for betting on himself’ by deciding to move on, a move that comes just over a week after Becky Lynch also left the company.

Ricochet’s fiancee Samantha Irvin is also on the Raw brand, but there are many stars in the wrestling world who work in different companies to their partners.

As for the Speed Championship – which is typically contested under a three minute time limit with bouts aired exclusively on X – a title match will air this week between Ricochet and Andrade.

The match was aired this week, and it’s been reported that Andrade – who recently returned to WWE after several years in rival promotion AEW – wins the title in that clash, but Ricochet is still officially recognised as champion for the time being.

On Raw, Ricochet has been embroiled in an ongoing rivalry with Ilja Dragunov and rising star Bron Breakker, and one would think the latter will be the one to officially write him off television.

The so-called One And Only is yet to comment on the reports, but he has ‘liked’ a post on X criticising the way he is used on WWE programming.

@DaFoxNamedPetty wrote: ‘No lie….i frfr think it’s time for @WWE to really let @KingRicochet show what’s he’s got on the mic….his wrestling ability goes without saying….

‘I feel Rico got some [stuff] to get up off his chest….for everybody that thinks he can’t talk the talk like he walks the walk.’

Meanwhile, his reported decision to leave comes weeks after AEW’s Will Ospreay – whose past matches with Ricochet in Japan and on the independent scenes – admitted he would love to rekindle their rivalry while blasting WWE for misusing his former opponent.

‘I don’t know how much longer he has got in his contract, but I think it might be up soon, man, I don’t know. I want him to know that there are people here that genuinely appreciate his work and I want to wrestle him again,’ he told ComicBook.

‘I just want to see him with more time and ability to showcase himself how I saw him.

‘He’s one of the best going, and if the opportunity presents itself, I think he should bet on himself. I think he should remind himself that he’s one of the best high-flyers to ever do it.’
