Singer and former X Factor star Amelia Lily has been forced to withdraw from a live performance after being hospitalised with a severe illness.

Amelia, 29, appeared as a contestant on the 2011 series of the ITV singing competition, ultimately coming in third place behind winners Little Mix.

In the years which followed X Factor, Amelia appeared on the reality TV show Geordie Shore, and as a contestant on the 20th series of Celebrity Big Brother.

Amelia, who is diabetic, was forced to pull out of a performance at the Sunderland Food and Drink Festival on Saturday after falling ill and being rushed to hospital.

Posting to her Instagram Stories, Amelia shared details of the horrifying sickness which left her unable to perform for fans.

‘Hello everyone, after a really tough week of being severely unwell, I have never felt like this in my life. I have been admitted into hospital with an underlying infection,’ she wrote.

An apologetic Amelia continued: ‘I am so sorry that I won’t be able to perform tomorrow evening. I love performing and am absolutely gutted I can’t be there tomorrow but I know I’m in the best place.’

A follow-up post revealed why she had been taken ill in the first place – being a kidney infection relating to an untreated UTI.

‘I was discharged last night and am back home, have to go back in the morning for some blood but I am on the mend. It resulted in being a kidney infection which came from a UTI that was left untreated,’ Amelia said.

Amelia’s most recent updates revealed the hellish week she’d had prior to being hospitalised; including a struggle to get an appointment with a doctor in spite of her increasingly aggressive symptoms.

‘I felt pain in my lower back at the start of the week and tried for three days to get into my doctors, but they were not taking any more appointments or e-consults which resulted into my vomiting and having the migraine and a fever, but with me being diabetic things can get a little more complicated as you can imagine.’

Thankfully, Amelia is on the mend now, speaking of her relief that ‘nothing else’ seemed to be amiss.

‘I just want to say a massive thank you for all the wonderful staff on ward 37 at James Cook Hospital who looked after me and gave me the best care. I admire each and every single one of you how hard you all work,’ the star added.

Amelia didn’t let her 2011 loss to Little Mix deter her from fame – or a singing career – releasing a single titled You Bring Me Joy following her stint on the show.

Her follow-up single, Shut Up (And Give Me Whatever You Got) charted at 11 on the UK Singles Chart, while her third, Party Over, peaked within the Top 40.

In 2015, she took to the stage during the UK tour of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and appeared as Whatshername in the London tour of Green Day’s American Idiot. Even more recently, she played Princess Fiona in Shrek: The Musical.
