The “Yellowstone” universe continues to expand, and fans finally have a fresh update on one of its most anticipated spinoffsâ”Y: Marshals.” The new series stars Luke Grimes, who is reprising his role as Kayce Dutton. It’s set to bring a gritty new chapter to Taylor Sheridan’s beloved franchise, and production is right around the corner. Here’s everything we know about the upcoming show, including when to expect it on screens.
What Is Kayce Dutton’s ‘Yellowstone’ Spinoff About?
“Y: Marshals” will follow Kayce Dutton, the youngest son of the Dutton family, as he trades life on the ranch for a badge and joins an elite unit of U.S. Marshals. According to the showâs official description, Kayce will combine his skills as a seasoned cowboy and a Navy SEAL to fight crime and restore order in Montana.
The series promises to explore the high psychological toll that comes with this dangerous line of work, as Kayce and his new teammates battle lawlessness in the rural West. For longtime fans of “Yellowstone,” this new storyline feels like a natural next step for Kayce.
At the conclusion of the flagship series in December 2024, he struck a landmark deal to sell the Dutton Ranch to Broken Rock Reservation under conditions that preserved his familyâs legacy and way of life. Now, his next chapter as a U.S. Marshal promises to deliver the same intensity and moral complexity that made his character a fan favorite.
When and Where Will Y: Marshals Premiere?
Production on “Y: Marshals” is scheduled to begin this fall in Utah. The location was chosen for its striking, rugged landscapes reminiscent of the original showâs Montana setting. The Utah Film Commission recently confirmed the news, fueling excitement among fans eager to see more of the franchiseâs signature western visuals.
Barring any delays, “Y: Marshals” is expected to premiere on CBS in the spring of 2026. Season 1 will consist of 13 episodes, which is four more than the first season of “Yellowstone.” The new series will air on Sunday nights at 9 p.m. Eastern Time, and will be the first in Sheridan’s Yellowstone-verse to air on a major network.
For fans hoping to revisit the original series before the spinoff debuts, all five seasons of “Yellowstone” are currently available for streaming on Peacock.
Who Is Involved in the Production of ‘Y: Marshals’?
So far, Grimes is the only confirmed cast member for “Y: Marshals.” He took to Instagram to share the spinoff announcement with fans, writing, “Cowboys donât say goodbye, they say see you later.” This was a big hint that Kayceâs journey was far from over.
Behind the scenes, the series will be steered by Spencer Hudnut. He will serve as writer, executive producer, and showrunner for “Y: Marshals.”. Hudnut previously worked on “SEAL Team” and “Unforgettable,” so he brings experience in action-driven storytelling to the project.
Heâll be joined by Sheridan, who will also serve as an executive producer. However, his level of day-to-day involvement remains to be seen given his growing list of projects. Grimes will additionally wear a producer’s hat on the spinoff, giving him influence both on screen and off.
According to CBS Entertainment President Amy Reisenbach, the show will maintain the high production standards that fans expect from the “Yellowstone” brand.
“We donât do cheap,” she assured reporters, per Variety, noting that the series budget will be on par with other major network dramas.
“Y: Marshals” joins a slate of future “Yellowstone” spinoffs, including “Dutton Ranch,” “1944,” “6666,” and “The Madison.” Three other “Yellowstone” spinoffs, “1883,” “Lawmen: Bass Reeves,” and “1923,” have already debuted and are streaming on Paramount+.
