1 killed, 2 critically hurt after being ejected from vehicle in South Loop

One person was killed and two others critically injured when they were ejected from their vehicle early Saturday in the South Loop.

About 2:15 a.m., a tow truck backed into an SUV, causing it to strike another vehicle, which lost control and hit a wall in the 100 block of West Roosevelt Road, Chicago police said. Three people were ejected from the vehicle.

Gisselle Chavez, a 21-year-old Niles resident, suffered a head injury and was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said. Her sister, 20-year-old Alexandra Chavez, and a man, 19, also suffered head injuries. They were taken to the same hospital in critical condition.

The driver who struck their vehicle cooperated with police, but the tow truck driver fled the scene, police said.

A GoFundMe set up by Chavez’s cousin — which had raised nearly $2,600 to help with funeral and medical bills by 7:30 p.m. Saturday night — said Alexandra Chavez was now in “stable” condition.
