One person died and five others were injured in a Wednesday morning crash on U.S. 385 in eastern Colorado, according to the state patrol.
Two teenage boys were airlifted to Denver-area hospitals after the crash, which happened at about 11:40 a.m. Wednesday north of Burlington, according to a news release from the Colorado State Patrol.
Burlington is a town in Kit Carson County, about 12 miles from the Colorado-Kansas border.
Investigators believe a 2001 Ford Focus with five teenage boys inside was stopped on U.S. 385, waiting to turn left, when a 21-year-old woman driving a 2018 Jeep crashed into the back, state patrol officials said in the release.
The crash sent both cars off the road and into a nearby field, according to the agency.
A 17-year-old boy, who has not been publicly identified, died from his injuries at the scene of the crash. Two other boys, 17 and 18 years old, were airlifted to Denver-area hospitals — one with critical and one with serious injuries, agency officials said.
Paramedics took the teenage Ford Focus driver, another 18-year-old passenger and the Jeep driver to the hospital with minor injuries, according to the release.
U.S. 385 was closed for several hours on Wednesday for the crash cleanup and investigation, but was fully reopened by 4:41 p.m., state patrol officials said.
