A 13-year-old boy charged with fatally shooting a 60-year-old man on an RTD bus in January pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder, according to the Denver District Attorney’s Office.
The boy, who has not been identified because he is a juvenile, was charged with first-degree murder after he fatally shot Richard Sanchez the night of Jan. 27 on an RTD bus near South Federal Boulevard and West Mississippi Avenue.
The boy shot Sanchez after a two-minute encounter on the bus, which started when the boy and two other juveniles boarded the bus and walked down the aisle past Sanchez, whose leg was extended into the aisle, according to an arrest affidavit.

The boy “exchanged words” with Sanchez as the group stepped or jumped over his leg, and Sanchez then walked toward the group and confronted them at the back of the bus. The boy then shot Sanchez multiple times and stepped over Sanchez’s body to leave the bus.
Sanchez was later pronounced dead at a hospital.
The 13-year-old initially faced 14 charges, including first-degree murder, assault, endangering a public transport crew and possessing a gun as a juvenile.
He pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder in juvenile court on June 6, Denver District Attorney’s Office spokesperson Matt Jablow said in an email. He is set to be sentenced on July 18.
