Two men were killed, five other people were injured and at least 16 were displaced by a fire at a single-story house in Sunland on Saturday evening, authorities said.
The fire was reported at 11:10 p.m. on Nov. 1 in the 10900 block of North Scoville Avenue, near Wentworth Street, said Los Angeles Fire Department spokeswoman Margaret Stewart.
It took 36 firefighters 30 minutes to extinguish.
Flames were showing when firefighters arrived at the 1,359-square-foot home, Stewart said. There were reports of trapped elderly occupants on the premises.
“During the fire attack, crews located one person and conducted a rapid transport to the hospital,” she said. “Two additional patients were located but were beyond medical help and determined (to be) deceased on scene.
An 87-year-old man was found outside the home with critical burn injuries and transported to a hospital, Stewart said.
Four other adults outside the home were also transported to hospitals, suffering from varying degrees of smoke inhalation.
One person declined further medical treatment.
The American Red Cross and the Mayor’s Crisis Response Team assisted the displaced.
It was unclear whether the house, which was built in 1948, was equipped with working smoke alarms, Stewart said, adding there were two buildings on the property.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
