2 dead in fiery crash between Fort Collins and Wyoming, the Colorado State Patrol reports

Two people died in a fiery crash on U.S. 287 between Fort Collins and Wyoming on Friday, closing the two-lane highway for several hours, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

At 6:18 p.m. Friday, the Colorado State Patrol responded to a crash involving a Honda Accord and a Chevrolet Suburban on U.S. 287 at Red Mountain Road. Just minutes before the crash, a resident had dialed 911 to report the driver of the Honda as a possible drunken driver, according to a release from the Colorado State Patrol.

Investigators report that the Suburban was headed south on U.S. 287 when the Honda veered from the northbound lane into the southbound lane, the release states. Trying to avoid the crash, the driver of the Suburban swerved and struck a guardrail before the two vehicles crashed head-on.

“Both vehicles became engulfed in flames, and both drivers were trapped in their vehicles,” the Colorado State Patrol reported.

Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene. The Larimer County Coroner’s Office will release their names after notifying their families.

The crash closed U.S. 287 in both directions for several hours. The road reopened just after 1 a.m. Saturday, according to information from CDOT.
