2 teenagers arrested in fatal Aurora shooting, robbery

Two teenage boys were arrested on suspicion of murder after a man was shot to death during a July robbery outside an Aurora apartment complex, police announced Friday.

The 14-year-old and 16-year-old boys were arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder, aggravated robbery, theft and unlawful handgun possession by a juvenile, according to a news release from the Aurora Police Department.

Police said the 14-year-old is also suspected of attempted first-degree murder.

The two teenagers are not being publicly identified because of their age, police said.

Aurora officers responded to a shooting outside of an apartment complex in the 100 block of Kenton Street at about 9:45 p.m. on July 21.

When officers arrived, they found one man had been shot.

Paramedics took the man, who the Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office identified as 20-year-old Thornton resident Jaylan Demetrious Moton, to the hospital, where he later died from his injuries, police said.

Investigators believe the two teenagers lured Moton and an unidentified 21-year-old Aurora man to the parking lot to rob them. The two suspects shot at the second man, but didn’t hit him.

Both boys were arrested in the days after the shooting — the 14-year-old was arrested on July 22 and the 16-year-old was arrested on July 23, police said. The arrests were not announced until Friday.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720-913-7867.
