2-year-old dies after driver crashes into Portillo’s in Oswego, injuring 13 others

A 2-year-old died and more than a dozen others were injured after a driver crashed into a Portillo’s restaurant in southwest suburban Oswego Wednesday afternoon.

The child was among 14 people who were injured after a 50-year-old woman crashed her car through the front entrance of the restaurant on Route 34 and Douglas Road, Oswego Police Chief Jason Bastin told reporters Wednesday evening.

Bastin said it was a “chaotic scene” as first responders arrived around 2 p.m. and immediately began performing CPR on the child.

It is not immediately clear why the driver, the lone occupant of the vehicle, crashed into the restaurant, Bastin said. He said the crash appeared to be an accident.

Bastin said it was too early to say if the driver accidentally pressed the gas pedal, or if the driver was having a medical emergency. He also couldn’t say if the driver accelerated from the parking lot or from nearly Route 34.

The 2-year-old and all the others injured were inside the restaurant when the crash occurred, Bastin said.

Eight people were taken to nearby hospitals, police said in an earlier statement. At least six others were treated at the scene and released.

Bastin said the driver was speaking after the crash and was also taken to a hospital. Three others had serious injuries, he said.

All of the other people injured were adults, Oswego Fire Protection District Chief Josh Flanders told reporters.
