Two dozen tenants were forced out of a north Aurora apartment building Friday night by a fire extinguished inside of a ground-level unit.
Aurora Fire Rescue spokesperson Eric Hurst said Saturday morning that at least some of the 19 adults and five children displaced by the blaze, the cause of which is still under investigation, may be able to return later in the day, depending on the extent of smoke damage.
The agency said in a news release that firefighters were dispatched to the complex in the 1400 block of North Kingston Street about 9:40 p.m. after 911 callers reported flames and people trapped inside.
The fire was contained within 20 minutes, and Hurst said firefighters helped two people evacuate the building. Two people also received on-scene medical treatment for smoke inhalation.
Tenants who were forced to leave are being assisted by the American Red Cross, the agency said in its release.
