Thirty-two people were shot, six fatally, in citywide gun violence from 5 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday, marking the most violent non-holiday summer weekend so far this year in Chicago.
In addition to the fatal shootings, Surah Amon, 31, was charged with murders after the Friday night South Shore death of her 1-year-old son, whom she allegedly drowned in Lake Michigan, marking the weekend’s seventh homicide.
Five of the fatal shootings occurred over the span of three hours Friday night into early Saturday. Most of the victims remain unidentified Monday.
The number of people killed and wounded in this weekend’s shootings surpassed the totals reported over Memorial Day weekend, which marks the unofficial start of summer. Over that holiday weekend, four men were killed, and at least 21 others were wounded.
Fourth of July weekend has been the only weekend this summer with more recorded homicides. Nine people were killed and 40 others were injured between 5 p.m. July 3 and 5 a.m. July 7.
Days before the city had its least violent Memorial Day weekend in at least 16 years, city officials unveiled their summer safety plan, which focused on weekend nights and teen gatherings.
The safety plan focuses on the work of violence interrupters to peacefully mediate conflict in Chicago’s neighborhoods that see the most violent crime and at large teen gatherings in Downtown.
A teenage boy was shot and killed Friday night in Englewood. Isriael Dixon, 17, was shot multiple times in the 6600 block of South Marshfield Avenue and dropped off by a group of people in an SUV at Holy Cross Hospital, Chicago police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said.
Dixon, of south suburban Crete, was pronounced dead about 10:07 p.m., according to the medical examiner’s office, which ruled his death a homicide.
A man was killed and three injured in a mass shooting in the parking lot of a strip mall in Chatham late Saturday, Chicago police said.
Police said the victims were standing outside about 11:45 p.m. Saturday in the 100 block of West 87th Street just off the Dan Ryan Expressway when someone opened fire, striking at least three people.
Rasheed Walker, 23, suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center where he was pronounced dead, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
A 25-year-old woman was shot in her head and was taken in critical condition to University of Chicago, and a 24-year-old man, shot in the left shoulder, was in good condition at Little Company of Mary Hospital. A 26-year-old man was shot in his leg and went to the University of Chicago where he was in good condition, police said.
Hours earlier, a man was fatally shot Saturday night in South Shore. He was found around 10:55 p.m. in the 2000 block of East 68th Street and pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
Another man was killed, and three people were wounded in a mass shooting in the South Chicago neighborhood Saturday morning, police said.
Just before 5 a.m., officers responded to a call of a person shot in the 8200 block of South Houston Avenue. They found an unidentified 20-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his neck, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
A 22-year-old woman was shot in her arm and listed in good condition at University of Chicago Medical Center, and two men, ages 38 and 25, were taken to the same hospital in serious condition with gunshot wounds to their abdomens.
Two people were shot, one fatally, in the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood early Saturday. A unidentified woman, 37, and a man were in the 7500 block of South St. Lawrence Avenue when someone in a passing vehicle fired shots around 1 a.m., police said.
The woman was pronounced dead at the scene with gunshot wounds to her abdomen. The man was shot in one of his knees and taken to University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was listed in fair condition.
A man was fatally shot in East Garfield Park. The unidentified 22-year-old was standing outside about 10 p.m. Friday in the 2800 block of West Arthington Street when someone walking nearby fired shots, police said. He suffered a gunshot wound to his torso and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.
Amon allegedly drowned her 1-year-old son in Lake Michigan in the South Shore neighborhood Friday night, police said.
Officers responded to a service call for marine distress and found a woman, 31, in the water around 9:45 p.m. in the 7000 block of South South Shore Drive. She had cuts on her wrists and was screaming that she killed her son, according to a police report.
The boy’s body was recovered by the police and fire officials. First responders performed chest compressions, but the boy was unresponsive, the police report said.
His death was ruled a homicide from drowning, according to the medical examiner’s office.
A third mass shooting involved four men shot Sunday afternoon in Austin. They were on a sidewalk in the 4900 block of West Ferdinand Street when an unknown car pulled up, and three people with handguns got out and fired shots at them, according to police.
All four men are in good condition, including a 26-year-old who was shot in his ankle, and a 51-year-old who was shot in his side; they were taken to Stroger Hospital. A 31-year-old shot in his shoulder and a 37-year-old shot in his legs were taken to Mount Sinai Hospital.
