Portions of the North Bay were rattled Sunday afternoon by a 4.0 magnitude earthquake that began in east Sonoma County, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The quake struck just before 3:31 p.m. about 3.7 miles west of Glen Ellen, just southeast of Santa Rosa, according to USGS data. The tremor began about 1.2 miles underground and some residents reported feeling about 10 seconds of shaking.
Some residents within less than 2 miles reported moderate shaking with light damage, but those just a bit further out only felt light shaking, according to what was reported to USGS. The quake was felt as far as San Jose, about 87 miles southeast.
A 3.1 magnitude aftershock was felt 8 minutes after, this time about 1.4 miles deep. At 4:04 p.m., another 3.4 magnitude quake hit about 4.3 miles west-southwest of Kenwood.
An employee at Glen Ellen Village Market said the earthquake seemed to pass by pretty quickly, causing more confusion than damage. Workers had to cleanup a few dropped boxes and a spill but fortunately nothing fell in the wine department.
