4.4 earthquake shakes Southern California

A 4.4-magnitude earthquake centered just west of Muscoy, and north of San Bernardino, rattled Southern California at 9:32 a.m. on Thursday, July 31, according to the United States Geological Survey.

In some areas, the movement lasted just a couple of seconds and was gentle. Elsewhere, it went on much longer. Some people described feeling a jolt.

The quake struck 5.3 kilometers below the surface.

By 10 a.m., almost 5,000 people had contributed to the USGS “Did You Feel It?” map. Most reported moderate or lighter shaking. Reports came in from as far away as San Diego to the south, Indio to the east, coastal communities to the west and past Palmdale to the north.

A 4.4-magnitude earthquake usually causes little damage.

The quake followed about 45 minutes after the last of three quakes ranging from 3.0 at 8:34 a.m. to 1.2 at 8:46 a.m. a few miles northwest of Rialto.
