The man was in the 5600 block of South Justine Street around 1:25 a.m. when he was approached by three people who demanded his property, Chicago police said.
When the man refused to comply, one of the assailants shot him in the left shin, police said.
He was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center where he was listed in fair condition, officials said.
No one was in custody.
