A breakfast comes from the kickoff for Morel of the Week

Jay Damm begins Morel of the Week “with a reasonable start” on Friday.

“With ample rains falling this spring (the most plentiful since COVID), I actually have some cautious optimism for the morel season,” he emailed Friday evening. “I keep my expectations low to avoid disappointment . . . I found these fresh, early season morels near a dead, fallen ash tree. They’ll make a nice addition to my scrambled eggs.”

That sounds a genius touch.

Reminder: Mushroom picking and foraging in general is prohibited at area forest preserves, park districts and dedicated nature preserves. It is allowed at many IDNR sites (state parks, etc.), but restricted until after 1 p.m. at sites with spring turkey hunting during the season.

MOTW, the celebration of hunting for morel mushrooms around Chicago outdoors and their stories (the stories matter, as this one shows), runs Wednesdays in the paper Sun-Times as warranted.
