Affordable homes project might replace Walnut Creek apartments
WALNUT CREEK — Dozens of affordable homes are in the works for a Walnut Creek site where existing apartments would have to be demolished to pave the way for a new residential project.
The 87-unit housing development would be built at 150-170 Sierra Drive in Walnut Creek. The 29-unit Sierra Garden Apartments complex now occupies the development location, according to the Apartment Finder website.

The project would be 100% affordable, according to the proposal. The existing apartment units would be bulldozed.

Satellite Housing is seeking a streamlined review process under multiple state laws, Walnut Creek public records show.
The developer also is seeking waivers for the project’s height, number of stories, the building’s setback from existing structures, and a parking concession, according to the planning documents.
The project would include two sections for open space. One of the open spaces would contain an open patio, a resident garden, a tot lot, and a swimming pool that already exists on site.
A timeline wasn’t immediately available for the Sierra Drive affordable homes development, which is going through the city review process.
Other efforts are underway to produce housing in Walnut Creek infill spots, as well. At 1271 and 1275 South California Blvd., a developer has proposed a 112-unit, five-story apartment complex that would replace a miniature golf course in downtown Walnut Creek.
