An emergency call around 11:30 a.m. reported an unresponsive female at the falls, on the North Fork Willow Creek. A search-and-rescue crew pulled her from the creek; she was pronounced dead at the scene.
During the recovery of the body, searchers noticed items that suggested another person had been with the woman, and a man was then found dead in the creek, the sheriff’s report said.
The pair’s identity was not released; the sheriff’s office said they were Madera County residents.
Angel Falls is a short hike from Bass Lake in the popular recreation area 12 miles south of Yosemite National Park’s Wawona entrance. Signs at the trailhead warn of slippery rocks and cold water at all times of year.
While the rescue crew was at the falls, at 12:15 p.m., another emergency call reported a hiker with a possible broken leg on the Lewis Creek Trail, a few miles away. She was carried out to an ambulance and taken to a hospital, the sheriff’s report said.
