A surge in violence saw 180,014 children dealt with in the 12 months to July 2023, a Freedom of Information request shows.

With the school year at 190 days it translates as 947 a day. Some 124,276 assaults on other pupils led to suspension, with another 1,970 so bad that expulsion resulted.

Another 52,237 pupils were suspended for attacking a teacher, and 1,531 expelled.

Some 202 incidents involved nursery pupils.

The figures emerged after a pupil, 15, was charged with murder over the stabbing of Harvey Willgoose, 15, at a school in Sheffield.

Christopher McGovern, of the Campaign for Real Education, said: “Teachers need to be given specialist training in how to restrain violent pupils.

“Alarm buzzers to summon help would be a step in the right direction.”

The Department for Education said it was “committed to turning the tide on poor behaviour”.
