The Kirkland’s Home store in Gilroy is reportedly among dozens in the chain that will be closed this year as its owner attempts to reboot the Bed Bath & Beyond brand.
Brand House Collective, which owns both brands, announced last month that it would close 25 Kirkland’s locations by January, USA Today reported. The news outlet said it confirmed that one of those to close is the Gilroy store, in a shopping center at the Highway 101-152 interchange.
Other California stores confirmed to be closing are in Fresno, Apple Valley, Palmdale, Redlands and Lake Elsinore, USA Today said.
Besides Gilroy’s, there are two Bay Area stores, in Livermore and Vacaville.
The company’s plan to open a chain of Bed Beth & Beyond Home stores relies on converting some of the existing Kirkland’s Home stores, most of which are in the eastern United States.
After filing for Chapter 11 protection in 2023, Bed Bath & Beyond closed all its physical locations.
The first of the new brick-and-mortar stores opened in August in Nashville. Since then two more have opened and three sites are listed on the company’s website as coming soon, all of them in Tennessee. Brand House has said it plans to have about 80 stores open under the new name by the end of 2026.
Executive Chairman Marcus Lemonis said that none of the new stores will be in California, as he is “taking a stand” against what he characterized as the state’s unfriendly attitude toward business. The announcement drew a snarky response on social media from the office of Gov. Gavin Newsom.
Kirkland’s Home has no connection to Costco, whose house brand is called Kirkland.
