ANAHEIM — Angels star Mike Trout finished fifth among American League outfielders in the first round of All-Star voting, advancing to the Phase 2 in the selection process.
Trout will be on the ballot in the next round with Riley Greene and Javy Baez of the Detroit Tigers and Steven Kwan of the Cleveland Guardians. Two of those four will join Aaron Judge of the New York Yankees as the starting outfielders. Judge bypasses the next round by virtue of getting the most votes of all American League players.
Voting for the Phase 2 begins Monday at 9 a.m. PT and concludes Wednesday at 9 a.m. PT. Votes can be cast on the official Major League Baseball website.
Trout, 33, has been an All-Star 11 times, but he hasn’t been able to play in an All-Star Game since 2019. He was injured in 2021, 2022 and 2023, and he was not selected in 2024.
After missing a month with a knee injury, Trout returned four weeks ago and has been starting exclusively at DH since then. He’s hitting .229 with 12 home runs and a .778 OPS.
Greene is hitting .299 with 17 homers and an .890 OPS. Baez is hitting .289 with nine homers and a .799 OPS. Kwan is hitting .307 with six homers and a .799 OPS.
No other Angels players came within 700,000 votes of qualifying for Phase 2.
Players not selected to start by fan voting could also be elected by the players or added to the team by MLB, which insures that each team has at least one representative.
Shortstop Zach Neto (12 homers, .814 OPS), catcher Logan O’Hoppe (17 homers, .735 OPS) and pitchers Yusei Kikuchi (2.79 ERA) and José Soriano (3.39) are potential All-Star selections.
