A 25-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of vehicular homicide Thursday after police say he ran a red light in south Aurora and crashed into another car, killing the driver.
The crash happened around 2 p.m. after an Aurora Police Department officer conducting speed enforcement nearby saw a white BMW sedan speeding at 84 mph on Interstate 225 in a 65-mph zone, police officials said Friday.
The driver of the BMW, Don Mai Phan, of Aurora, exited the highway and continued to speed east on East Iliff Avenue until he ran the red light at South Blackhawk Street, hitting a Honda sedan that was turning left from Blackhawk onto Iliff.
The Honda driver, a 25-year-old man, was killed in the crash and pronounced dead at the scene, Aurora police said. His name will be released by the Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office.
Phan and a passenger were detained after the crash and taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
Crash debris damaged two other vehicles at the intersection, but no other injuries were reported, according to the Aurora Police Department.
Phan was arrested on suspicion of vehicular homicide and vehicular eluding, both felonies, and misdemeanor reckless driving and speeding.
He is in custody on $50,000 bail and is set to appear in court Wednesday for filing of charges.
